The Epic of Mo

Once upon a time, there was a little boy named Mo Farah who was very fast. Faster than the other boys. Much faster than a normal person needs to be in the normal course of medium-paced life.

He was so fast, his running took him all the way to the Olympics. And even there, among the fastest of the fastest, this little boy, now a man, was…you guessed it…still the fastest.

So where was he to run now? Now that there was no doubt of his speed, and he had the medals to show for it. Now that he was one of the most decorated athletes in the history of Great Britain. Would he stop running? Would he pick up a new hobby? Something like…I don’t know…skee ball? Or would he continue to run? And if so…where would he run to?

As it happened, we’ve uncovered the secret diary of track & field hero Mo Farah, and as it turns out, he never did stop running. The best part is…his diary has pictures.

Day One: I had heard successful professional athletes are sometimes popular with ladies looking for love, but nobody told me they hunt in packs. These runaway brides weren't quite quick enough to catch me. (That's hardly ideal running gear they're wearing.) Still, I hope they find true love somewhere, someday, and never let it get away. Or, at the very least, if not true love, maybe a bachelor party running a marathon in tuxedos.

Day Two: While I know the ladies looking for husbands meant well, I can't say the same of the next gentleman I met on my epic journey. As a matter of fact, gentleman may be too strong a word  altogether.
I believe Mr. Cyclops may have had some ill intent toward me. He sure seemed to have an angry expression on his face. Then again, I'd be angry too if somebody hit me that hard with the ugly stick. Luckily for me, I didn't have to use any guile to outsmart him. I just ran the heck out of there.

Day Three: The people of Springfield greeted me warmly at first. But one off-handed comment about how the lemonade and flapjacks were
better in Shelbyville, and they turned into an angry mob faster than
you can say "DOH!" I got away from them, but I think they're all still out there somewhere. It makes you wonder if they'll ever stop running. I mean it's been like 30 years. And they haven't really been good at running since season 8 or so...But that's none of my business.

Day Four: Anyway, since I had already crossed over into the cartoon realm, (I promise no performance enhancing drugs were consumed on this journey), I decided to pay the teletubbies a visit. What a nice bunch of...creatures. Really a ton
of fun. I couldn't understand much of their squeak language, but they were super duper friendly. I like to think I wasn't running away from Tinky Winky, Dipsy, and the gang as much as I was running with them...while staying a good deal in front.

Day Five: The tubbies may have been a little touchy-feely for my taste, but I sure missed them when I stopped over in Miami. This gentlemen was the least friendly of the bunch, and he didn't even have the ugly excuse like the Cyclops did. He just kept wanting me to meet his little friend. I thought to myself, he was pretty little already, so how small could his friend possibly be? But I never did get the answer to that riddle, because he started shooting at me. I ran really fast that day, kids. Really, really, really fast. I still don't know what made him so angry. Maybe he got cut from his high school track team? That must be it. Anyway, after that, I decided it was about time to head home and start training for 2016.

Colgate Women's Games 2012

One of our customers, Delco Stallions Track Club competed in this event.

I wish I've had heard of this sooner, it looks like an excellent indoor track event that's very competitive and positive.

Jamaican Flag Black, Gold and Green
Jamaica has announced that their uniforms for the IAAF World Championships in August in S. Korea will be designed by none other than Bob Marley's oldest daughter Cedella Marley. This has been met with favorable reviews.

I vote to refrain from judgment until I see the goods!

Penn Relays + The NFL Draft

Usain Bolt at the 2010 Penn Relays

I didn't make it out to the Penn Relays last week, because I'm lame. And there was that little thing, the NFL Draft, which is --arguably-- the raison d'etre for the Internet. I feel the TV aspect is virtually unwatchable; but I LOVE the multi-source continual data load required with each passing pick. (I've been a Draft/Internet fiend since, I swear 1996-97-ish.) I hear Saturday was beautiful. I never emerged from my man cave.

But we did send a crack photographic crew to the Penn Relays. This is what they came back with:

Penn Relays To Get Jolt of Bolt

As a Philly native (i.e., a strong opinion about anything sports-related and not afraid to espouse it), it is my firmly held conviction that the Penn Relays don't really require a whole lot of extra hullabaloo to maintain it's status as one of the country's premier track& field events.

Franklin Field
Yeah, I know it's the oldest & largest, too. But those criteria alone don't exact make a track event sizzle. As in, "Hey, let's go watch the fat, old dudes race against each other."old fat dudes in spandex

Then again, when 3X Olympic Gold Medalist Usain Bolt decides he wants to participate, any event's "street cred" would spike upward. (heck, maybe even Dancing With the Stars)

True, the Penn Relays, held @ the Univ. of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field (since 1895), has stood the test of time. It can get along quite nicely without any singular athlete and their associated shijizzle (or however Snoop Dogg would modify).Snoop Doggy Dogg

But Bolt's a special athlete. No doubt. Hailing from the track star, spawning grounds of Jamaica, Usain is the current world record holder in the 100 meter. By the most commonly used measuring instrument, he is "the World's Fastest Human Being". And at 9.58 sec., he is most definitely jammin'.Usain Bolt

Bolt is expected to take part in the 4X100 relay pitting USA vs. THE WORLD, scheduled for 4:15 on Saturday the 24th (The event kicks into high gear on Thursday the 22nd).

And just when you thought you could get out of here without some mention of the uniforms being worn....WRONG! We will have our eyes peeled and be taking notes. With Jamaica representing, you know it's going be to be colorful!

The Penn Relays – So Much History, So Much Modernity

The Penn Relays – So Much History, So Much Modernity

I grew in Philly, home of the Penn Relays. This annual event, for the uninitiated, is arguably America’s foremost track meet. It was 1st held in 1895!
The Speed Boys stick together
While I had a brief and unillustrious track career as a member of my jr. high school’s 440 relay team, self-dubbed “The Speed Boys” (Yes, I was the slowest boy), I always had an appreciation for the Penn Relays and respect for the athletes who competed there every year. It was hometown pride, too.

Thirty years later (I’m 48 now), my respect is unchanged and my appreciation has matured. Age (and bad knees) will do that.

I’ve lived a good part of my adult life in New York and Los Angeles. I returned to Philly 8 years ago to start Team Sports Planet. Honestly, prior to moving back, I’d kind of forgotten about The Penn Relays. It’s cool that my appreciation for them has been reinvigorated.

If any of you have the chance to visit Philly for this event, you’ll definetly get a kick out of them. It’s a festival for the senses. Great sights, sounds and the occasional pounding of the heart. All taking place on the University of Pennsylvania’s storied campus, just minutes from the historical heartland of Philly’s downtown area.

What’s new and exciting about the event – or more so the athlete’s—is the parade of ultra modern fabrications that are represented, in a wide and colorful swath each day of the event (Okay, the occasional thunderstorm, can dampen the display, but nonetheless…).

Ultra modern Under Armour track speed suitPerhaps second only to swimming in the need for ergonomic sensibility, track uniforms have been at the forefront of modern fabrication technologies and design architecture. In particular for sprinters, where wind resistance is the enemy.

Go to Franklin Field during the Penn Relays this year (they start on April 19th), and you be treated to a smorgasbord of styles, in bright colors, reflecting the efforts of hundreds of schools, thousands of coaches, athletic directors and, of course, the athletes themselves as they fight the foe that is, in a word, wind.

Blends of Spandex, Lycra, Nylon and more are calibrated to wring peak performance from the nation’s best track performers. While Olympic aspirations justly fill the minds of some participants, almost all can proudly strut their stuff in the fashion forward world of modern track uniforms.

And every year, for….oh, about the past 114 years or so…they’ve done it in my hometown…in Philly @ the Penn Relays.
