Ryan Howard Donates $1.2 Million To Philadelphia School District

PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia Phillies star Ryan Howard is helping local students dress for success – in athletics.

The first baseman announced Thursday that his Ryan Howard Family Foundation will donate Adidas sportswear valued at nearly $1.2 million to the cash-strapped Philadelphia school district.

The gift will enable 57 city high schools to select athletic shoes and apparel to match the schools' colors. Four middle school athletic programs will receive shoes.

Acting Superintendent Leroy Nunery says the donation "will make a world of difference to our athletes." The school district had a budget gap of more than $629 million this year, forcing layoffs and cuts in many programs.

Howard's foundation is also providing turkeys, winter coats and school supplies to more than 500 struggling families in the Philadelphia area.

Xenith LLC, the maker of football helmets, announced a partnership with PAR Inc., and its newly developed Concussion Recognition and Response (CRR) Mobile Application. As a result of this partnership, Xenith and PAR Inc. will work together to educate coaches, administrators, parents, and athletic trainers nationwide on signs, symptoms and recognition of concussions.

The application, developed by Gerard A. Gioia, PhD, and Jason Mihalik, PhD, is designed to assist in recognizing the signs and symptoms of a suspected concussion, allowing for a quick and appropriate response. The application takes less than 5 minutes to administer and is iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch) and Android compatible.

"We are extremely excited to partner with Xenith to enhance safety for athlete populations," said CRR co-author Dr. Gerry Gioia. "We continue to be impressed with both Xenith's innovative technology and their company-wide mission to improve education and awareness. We look forward to working collectively to improve safety measures nationwide."

As a result of this partnership, Xenith and PAR Inc. will provide the CRR Application to the entire Snoop Youth Football League, making this the first ever league-wide adoption of CRR. The application will also be available on Xenith's newly developed Xenith Academy, an online educational risk reduction Curriculum available to athletes, coaches, parents and league administrators.

"Proper recognition and management of injuries are critical parts of a complete risk reduction strategy, and CRR technology assists in that process," said Xenith Founder and CEO Vin Ferrara. "Dr. Mihalik and Dr. Gioia are leaders in the field of concussion research, and I look forward to working with them on this initiative."

The NBA lockout is here to stay and it just doesn't seem to be changing anytime soon. It's unfortunate for all of the true NBA fans around the world, left with no one to root for, while owners, players and others can't come to an agreement. Another unforeseen problem cause by the economy. So what other options do the disgruntled NBA fans have to assuage their hunger for the sport?

They could watch Minor League Basketball and the fact that the leagues are very regional helps too! The main drawback to this is finding a station that would air their games, public access, CN8, etc...?

Basketball fans could start showing more support their local High School Basketball team. The players are local stars and the tickets are cheaper than any NBA game I could imagine. $20 a seat? Maybe?

Or you could get off your butt and start your own basketball team instead of being an "Armchair ~~Quarterback~~ Point Guard." That way you can put in all of hard work and dedication you expect of your favorite basketball heroes with half of the critics and none of the salary! :)

"I have heard some recent talk about a newer, safer helmet that Rawlings plans on introducing to the major leaguers. It's called the Rawlings Coolflo S100. But that’s not all I’ve heard.

Rumor, and the NY Times, has it that many MLB players think the new helmet is going to crimp their style. Mets right fielder Jeff Francoeur said of the aesthetically unpleasing helmet (which really, isn’t that different looking), "We are going to look like clowns out there."

Strike up the violins. Anybody feel sorry yet? Nope? Good—hold that thought."

Unlike football, boxing and MMA, baseball is not a contact sport. Despite that fact safety precautions must still be applied and understood by all players of the sport, specifically I'm speaking about baseball batting helmets.

Currently attitudes about wearing batting helmets for baseball have changed drastically since the were first invented by Roger Bresnahan in 1908. Roger Bresnahan, the New York Giants catcher was hospitalized for a month during a baseball game after being hit in the head. After learning from first hand and a near fatal experience about the damage a speeding baseball can cause to players, he invented the baseball batting helmet!

Today batting helmets are mandatory in the MLB for players and coaches that are on the field, even the bat and ball boys/girls are required too! It's great to see that attitudes towards the safety of the players are taken seriously and progress in is being made in the advancement of the technology for the safety equipment as well.

I'm Jory Jensen, baseball instructor and today we're going to be talking about how to wear baseball socks and pants.

Now, what's important to understand is there is a correct way to wear your socks also known more formally as a stirrup. It's pretty self explanatory how to put on a regular sock. That would be the same way you wear a baseball sock but a stirrup actually has a right way and a wrong way. If you look at the angle of the stirrup right there, that part, this part is the bigger cut out. That is the part that's supposed to go in the, in the back of your leg. The shorter part is supposed to go in the front of your leg, therefore making your stirrups stay a little further down on your leg. As I put this on here, you'll see the difference even though it's still black you can still see it.

The idea is to have your stirrup come down on the front and also on the back, therefore covering your feet but at the same time still being able to recognize that it is a stirrup rather than just a plain sock. So, once again, as I explained that this section of the sock, of the stirrup is the part that goes in the back and this section is the part that goes on the front.

Now, with your baseball socks you are able to wear your pants any way you would like. If you would like to wear them up, it is okay to wear them up around closer to your knee. If you'd like to wear them down, it is okay to wear them down. I would suggest, however, pulling your socks up high even if they are underneath your pants, that way when you are running and playing, they don't bother you. They don't cause you any problems with your pants. If your socks have a tendency to fall down or slide down, you should look at getting a new pair of socks to make sure that the elastic band is tight when you pull them up and I'm Jory Jensen, baseball instructor and we've just explained how to wear baseball pants and socks.

Hi, I'm Karina Fraley for Expert Village and today we're talking about enrolling your child in little league. Once you've enrolled you child, you're going to have to get a uniform. You can buy a little league uniform through one of the vendors that the little league organization works with. You are going to have to purchase your own and there are a few options, they're not tons of options but there are I think 3 different lettering options and you can have a cap and socks and visors that can be ordered as well. The packages are pretty reasonably priced. A shirt and a hat could be bought for about $25 and they do go up from there. But that would just be something that your individual team determines what your uniform would be and where you would get it from. So again, you are responsible for providing your child's uniform so don't be surprised once you enroll, that is going to be an added expense.

I'm Jory Jensen, baseball instructor. And today, we are going to be talking about how to wear our baseball pants high. There are two ways to wear our pants high. One way is we pull our pants up and you kind of let your pants be loose all the way through your whole, your whole leg. This is also a personal preference. Anyway you would like to wear them where your pants are loose. Another way, another way that a lot of people do it is they fold, they fold their pants underneath and the roll them. And as they roll them and it's important to be careful not to, not to roll too much but more of a folding motion rather than a rolling motion. Therefore getting rid of the wrinkles but still allowing you to wear your pants high. Okay. There's, there's the difference in the two ways to wear them. You can either roll them underneath or you can pull them and let them kind of bunch up. Either way, it allows you to wear your pants high. I'm Jory Jensen, baseball instructor. Hi, I'm Karina Fraley for Expert Village and today we're talking about little league. Once you've enrolled your child and you've filled out all of your forms and everything is ready to go, you're going to want to pick up the uniform. You want to really encourage your child to be very respectful of the uniform. It always has to look neat and clean at the start of a game even though it doesn't end up that way normally by the end of a game. But really install in your child a sense of pride little league is a staple of Americana and it really needs to be treated with respect. So when you're done playing the game, make sure that your child if they're old enough and do their own laundry that they wash their uniform quickly and if not be sure that you do that. That you remove any grass stains, that you wash it as directed so that next time your child goes out to play in the uniform they'll show up looking nice and neat and doing the uniform proud.

I'm Jory Jensen, baseball instructor. Today, we're going to be talking about how to correctly wear a baseball hat. Now, that depends on whether or not you want to be able to see the game. The correct way is going to be the comfortable way, whatever is comfortable to you. Preferably, you know the hat is to block the sun. As you can see right now the hat is blocking the sun from my eyes so that I can see what is going on right now. If I was to wear my hat too tall, I would not be able to see because the sun is in my face. If I am too low, now I can't see the game and what's going on and if it is to the side, now I can no longer see either because the sun is in my face again. So, as far as the correct way to wear the baseball hat, I'm going to say that it is whatever is comfortable to you as long as you're able to see the baseball, field the baseball, catch the baseball and throw the baseball, making you a better baseball player. BEN GRAHAM: Uniforms are important to the game of baseball. Some of our most famous teams, the Red Sox for example, are named after pieces of their uniform. The Red Sox take their name from the fact that they originally wore red socks. The White Sox got their name by wearing white socks in the beginning. Socks were very important in the early days of baseball.

Normally, your sock would be a standard white sock with a particular team-colored stripe going up to the side. That would lead into your baseball pants. These are usually made out of a thin material today, a synthetic material. Originally, they were made out of cloth, cotton, sometimes linen in the early days of baseball. These, generally, go all the way down to the ankles. Sometimes, they are worn up just above the calf muscle.

Another part of the uniform, the part that most teams take the most pride in today is the jersey. Right now, I'm wearing a standard batting practice jersey. You'll see this before the game a lot of the times. The actual jersey itself will be a buttoned-down jersey in Major League Baseball. In the collegiate level, they normally do wear it tucked into the uniform. You'll usually have your team logo right above the heart, symbolizing that you are keeping your team close to your heart. Sometimes that will be for a home jersey, you'll see the logo. On the road, sometimes, you'll just see the city name worn across the chest.

The hat is also a very important piece of the baseball uniform. It doesn't just hide the hair. It's not just a fashion accessory. This does serve a purpose on the field as it blocks the sunlight and creates a little bit of shade if you're in the outfield, especially. You can look up into the sky and tuck your hat, and that will help you to find the ball.

The baseball uniform is basically unchanged since the inception of the game. Sometimes, they've been looser. Sometimes, they've been tighter. But the basics--the jersey, the pant, the sock--those things have all remained, basically, the same throughout the history of baseball. And that's the uniform.

Baseball Pants For Dummies: A quick and simple guide for the totally clueless

The sport of baseball has come a long way since its inception (a rock and a stick) and after all of the progress made there still isn’t an easy way to decide which pant to wear. This guide is intend to be a tool to decide what style of pant to wear with your baseball jersey and as companion to my “Types of Baseball Uniforms” post. Now with that out of the way, lets get started!

Traditional Cut – Mid Calf or ¾ Length Knickers
The nostalgic value of the traditional ¾ length knickers is priceless, nothing captures this better than the mid calf cut and for good reason, it was apart of the first baseball uniform! The benefits of the “throwback” back pant style is that they are out of the way of the cleats and are in no danger of overlapping the bottom as it is with the now infamous Baggy Cut Pants, a.k.a Pajama Pants! Traditionally worn with stockings and stirrups, today just socks are worn with them. Also like many modern updates the original white with navy stripes or solid black has become somewhat less popular and the color and decoration combinations are near limitless!

Ankle Length Elasticized Leg
Today this is the standard baseball pant that you just can’t go wrong with, it is readily available in many sizes, lengths, fabrics and colors. It also lends itself well to decoration options such as pinstripes, panels, piping and braiding. The ankle length pant is the best bet for any team looking for a strong uniform look with out much of a headache.

Open Bottom Leg – Hemmed and Unhemmed
This guy is the less uptight cousin of the ankle length pant, its shares all of the pros of the ankle length pant, but with one key exception there is no elastic! These come hemmed and unhemmed. If they are unhemmed they can either be hemmed to the player’s preferred length or just left unhemmed so that they fall to the shoe. This particular style of pant is a great alternative for those who find the elastic bands uncomfortable and are looking for a somewhat more relaxed fit. Like ankle length pant the Open Bottom pant comes in a variety of colors and decoration options to suit what ever your team needs are.

Baggy Cut Open Leg or Unhemmed
The most relaxed and loose fitting pant on the market. Tradition is completely thrown to the wind in the name of style, which has created the now infamous Manny Ramirez “Pajama Pants.” Influenced by black/hip-hop culture the same way basketball, football and many other professional sports, today’s athlete is looking for form, function and comfort. There are many naysayers and fans complaining about the style and talk about the good old days, but these are also the same people not on the field playing the game.

In my opinion, its not what you wear, but how you play the game!

Full Button Baseball Uniforms
The iconic, classic baseball uniform of the golden age of baseball is best expressed as the full button baseball uniform. Though today there are plenty style and color options available, many baseball teams prefer more traditional color schemes such as white with navy pinstripes for the home and a solid navy or black as their road uniform. As far as decoration options are concerned traditional tackle twill lettering and numbering works best with the uniform and complete the iconic look of the baseball uniform. Of course pinstriped pants with stirrup are definitely on the table for any one looking to complete the classic feel of the traditional baseball uniform.

Faux Front Baseball Uniforms
A new twist to a classic design, faux front baseball uniforms appear to be traditional baseball uniforms except they usually only have two functioning buttons and the rest are for decoration. They come in many different colors, dependant on manufacturer and may also come predecorated with piping and panels. In addition to that faux front baseball uniforms work great with decoration since no movement or sliding is possible a full chest heat transfer team emblem will sit right at home on the uniform with the need of extra alignment precautions. Another benefit of the faux front base ball jersey is that it doesn’t separate or stretch at the buttons, which many of the larger team members will greatly appreciate.

Two-Button Baseball Uniforms (2-Button Baseball Jerseys)
The two-button is similar to the faux front, but with out the extra superficial buttons. Two-button jerseys offer a very generous amount of decoration space, this is excellent for large team emblems and is appreciated by the not so traditional or men’s softball player. Two-button jerseys tend to be very comfortable by design and are enhanced by the use of moister wicking fabrics. Two-button baseball uniforms are a great choice for any one looking for a non-traditional style and comfort.

Sublimated Baseball Uniforms
First and foremost sublimated baseball jerseys are the newest kind of baseball uniform out on the market today. Sublimated baseball uniforms have the option to be as non-traditional and wild as you can possibly imagine or a more traditional look can be utilized for nostalgic effect. There are many different types of fabrics offered for sublimated uniforms, to name a few, mesh, mock mesh, lycra, dazzle and micro fiber are the typical fabrics of choice. In addition to that, the team emblem, player name, numbers and any other decorations of the jersey is dyed directly into the fabric and are guaranteed to never peel, crack or fade.

Jamaica has announced that their uniforms for the IAAF World Championships in August in S. Korea will be designed by none other than Bob Marley's oldest daughter Cedella Marley. This has been met with favorable reviews.

I'm a Pepper, You're a Pepper...So Who's the Bimbo?

A couple days ago the Philadelphia Union, my hometown's MLS squad, announced Bimbo Bakeries USA as their official jersey sponsor. In pro soccer, jersey sponsorship is a huge thing. And Union execs are quick to point out that it's a pretty big deal for them, too. But is it a good thing?

The deal, at a reported $12 million over 4 years, ain't bad. That's for sure. For the coffers of the Union, it's money in the bank. No waiting for ticket sales. Concessions. Nope, it's Dinero Hoy. Today Money. (Yes, save your politically correct hearts, Bimbo is headquartered in Mexico)

This "business bent"(like Beckham?) isn't the usual subject matter here, but as you may know, I own Team Sports Planet, a company that, amongst other things, sells decorated soccer jerseys. So it's well within my bailiwick.

Almost any business entity is well-served by cash in advance (some here) and still more guaranteed over time (the check's, figuratively speaking, in the mail). And Manchester United, the Union ain't. (There's only one!) So what's the problem?

It starts with the not so proverbially "300lb. Bimbo in the Room".

The "political correctness" question is one better handled by others (as my use of bad "Spanglish" above demonstrates). But let's just agree that ""Words mean something."

Just Google the word Bimbo. I guess you'd eventually find something about the sponsor and their baked products. But, uh....I got distracted. (Google Images is even more, uh, problematic.)

Some company's products have defined a category (see Google, Xerox, FedEx). But no matter how much Bimbo spends it will NEVER re-define "Bimbo". Not gonna happen. Never has. FYI: The company name is NOT Spanish or even Mexican in origin. Allegedly it was a coined by some marketing genius who grafted "Bingo" with "Bambi". (What was he/she smoking?)

But back to the deal. Is it even the best one that could have been made. Even with the same exact corporate partner? Is it a Brand marketing mistake?

Bimbo bakeries manufactures many very familiar brand name products (Entenmanns, Stroehmann, even, surprisingly Thomas' English Muffins).

And they are reportedly interested in buying financially troubled regional (as in Philly) Tastykakes. So why not use one of them? Why, instead, do they want to shove "Bimbo" down our throats? (Insert salacious joke here)

Whatever the rationale, I gotta say it's bone-headed. Bimbo ain't going nowhere. We know what one is and we like it. Or hate it. But we ain't willing to replace it, for sure. The smarter play: Buy Tastycakes (their products completely ROCK for those that have not had the pleasure); then launch nationally (national signage is part of their deal with the Union & MLS), with Tastycakes. (I admit some "cultural bias as a Philly native).

On another point: Is the deal short sighted? You'd have to say "maybe". But to a business entity as fragile as any MLS team in today's economy, I'd honestly reply "Tomorrow is promised to no one." So "Yes" and "So what"?

As to the question: Will it detract from other revenues streams (namely, jersey sales)? On the aesthetic front alone, the combo of the two designs is utterly horrific. IMHO it takes an average at best looking jersey and adds a diametrically opposed(in graphical sensibility) logo, making for an ugly mess of a jersey. It would be UNFIT TO SHIP if it came out my company's production department. It's --unquestionably-- terrible.

On to the fans. Who? What? Okay, the people who are supposed to BUY these newly befouled jerseys. I'm not sure if MLS shares the revenues from ALL jersey sales with each team or if the teams (who benefit in either scenario) retain sole possession of their squad's jerseys. (If someone knows please tell) . But you gotta figure that the net result of the Bimbo sponsorship is a lose-lose for the fans (and the Union) as to team jersey sales. What GIRL or WOMAN would put on a god-awful ugly shirt with the ugly logo spelling out "Bimbo"?!?! This is kinda cute:

What PARENT buys this for their kid? What GUY wants to don this piece of crap? I will be STUNNED if this lose-lose scenario is ever ADMITTED by team execs; but I ASSURE you the deal will send jersey sales into the toilet.

Lastly, how does this thing play out long term? Does the deal ruin the brand "Philadelphia Union"?

Well, I honestly HATED the name to begin with. As a Philadelphia businessman. Why? Because our town, quite reasonably, has a negative perception as a place to DO business. Why? The UNIONS. Not the team. The actual unions that hold the business development back in the Stone Age. You'd think it was 1950 the way union leaders in this town blather on. The money that is lost when businesses choose to NOT set up in Philly because the cost of union construction, litigation, pay scales and, yes, intimidation. Who needs all that when the suburbs of Philly are a stone's throw away? (Even Bimbo Bakeries USA is in the SUBURBS!)

So yeah, in short, two wrongs don't make a right.
